  • The Department of Pharmacy conducted ‘Pharmacognostic Tour’ on 10th June, 2016 at Reiek Tlang, Mizoram for collection of Medicinal Plants.
  • Current Affairs and General Knowledge Quiz competition was conducted among 2nd Semester B.Pharm for Personal Development under IQAC programme during June 2016.
  • The Department of Pharmacy conducted Refresher Course for Pharmacist in association with the Mizoram State Pharmacy Council during 20th -22nd July, 2016.
  • The IBT hub, Dept. of Pharmacy conducted an Outreach Program on the topic of ‘Introduction to Basic Research in Biotechnology’ at Govt. higher Secondary School, Saitual, Mizoram on 23rd March, 2016.

  • The Department of Pharmacy organized ‘International Conference cum Exhibition on Drugs Discovery and Development from Natural Resources’ on 5th – 6th February, 2014 at Berawtlang Tourist Centre, Zemabawk. 239 participants gathered from India, Japan and Australia, 67 posters and 13 oral presentation was held. Four invited speakers had a talk at different topics on Drugs Discovery.
  • The Dept. of Pharmacy conducted HPLC Method Development Training was conducted under IQAC programme during 6-8thJanuary, 2014. Mr Amit Saha, Application specialists of M/s WATERS was the resource person.
  • The Dept. of Pharmacy conducted Hands on training on Sophisticated Instruments was conducted for outgoing students of B.Pharm during 15-17thAugust, 2013.
  • The Department of Pharmacy conducted Training on Communication and Interview skill for B.Pharm outgoing students during 12-14thAugust, 2013.
  • The Department of Pharmacy organized One Day Seminar on ‘Animal Welfare and Ethics’ on 6thJune, 2013 at the Conference Hall, Hotel Regency, which was attended by 130 participants from various colleges and University from Mizoram State.
  • The Department of Pharmacy organized One Day Seminar on Biotechnology- Trends in Drugs Discovery was organized by Institutional Level Biotechnology Hub on 23rd February, 2013.
  • The Department of Pharmacy organized Parents-Teachers Meet on 19th November, 2012. Parents of students attended from different North Eastern States. Different Pharmacy Course related issues were discussed.
  • The Department of Pharmacy Conducted,‘Hands Training  on HPLC Gas Chromatography’ for outgoing students of B. Pharm during 15th – 17th August, 2012.

The Department of Pharmacy organized Organized National level Seminar on Recent Advance in Natural Product Research in association with Dept. of Zoology, Pachhunga University College during 29th Nov-1st December, 2012. Participants and Resource persons from all over India attended the programme.

Abstracts

Cancer is one of the major health problem in Mizoram. The problem could be related to high consumption of carcinogen containing products such as tobacco due to easy availability and lack of awareness. The study has done to find out the relations of tobacco products and cancer, also considering age factor. From the study, it was found that lung cancer among the males and breast cancer among the females are more due to cigarette smoking, consumption of sahdah and tuibur.

Abstracts

Croton caudatus Geisel is  a traditionally used antiseptic medicine for cuts and wounds among the people of Manipur and Mizoram. The methanolic extract of Croton caudatusGeisel  was  investigated for  their radical scavenging activity using DPPH, anti-lipid peroxidation activity and total phenolic content. Significant results were observed in all the tested parameters for antioxidant activity. The antimicrobial activity was tested using disc diffusion method. The findings indicate that the methanolic leaves extract of Croton caudatusGeisel  exhibited antioxidant activities in the in vitro studies but does not possess antimicrobial activity in the concentration used in the present study.

ABSTRACT:

Stevioside is one of the natural sweeteners found in the plants Stevia rebaudiana. It is reported that having a property of sweetness 300 times than sucrose. The plant cultivated in Mizoram is not yet verified for its stevioside content. Therefore the present work aims to explore the percentage of stevioside in the plant extract of  Stevia rebaudiana found in South Sabual of Mizoram.

 DETERMINATION OF PSEUDOEPHEDRINE HYDROCHLORIDE IN TABLET FORMULATION BY GAS CHROMATOGRAPHY USING FLAME IOIZATION DETECTOR

 Abstract: Gas Chromatography is an analytical technique which is used to identify and quantify compounds in a mixture. Pseudoephedrine is a sympathomimetic drug of penethylamine and amphetamine classes. It may be used as a nasal/sinus decongestant, as a stimulant, or as a wakefulness-promoting agent. Pseudoephedrine is used in the illegal production of methamphetamine. The sample tablet E-kuf obtained from Joint Director, Food and Administration, Health and Family Welfare Department, Mizoram, was identified and quantified by Gas Chromatography using Flame Ionization Detector. The sample was found to contain Pseudoephedrine Hydrochloride.

 DETERMINATION OF HEAVY METALS IN FOOD SAMPLES USING ATOMIC ABSORPTION SPECTROSCOPY

 ABSTRACT

The present study was conducted to analyse the heavy metals (Chromium, Copper, Iron and Zinc) in some food samples including Bread, Biscuits, Cake, Turmeric, Ginger, Oyster mushroom, Split gill, Milk and Ibuprofen tablets. All the samples were digested using conc. HNO3 in a microwave digester. The digested samples were then analysed using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS) to determine the heavy metals contents in the samples. The contents of each heavy metals in the samples were calculated and compared with the standard permissible limits. The results obtained were from to be within the safe permissible limits except the level of chromium in the local biscuits. This indicates the necessity for the control and effective regulatory measures to be taken to assure the safety of food samples available in the local market for human consumption.

 ESTIMATION OF PERSISTENT PESTICIDE RESIDUES LEVEL IN SELECTED VEGETABLE SAMPLES AVAILABLE IN THE AIZAWL MARKETS

ABSTRACT                                                                

The ever growing market demand had forced the cultivators to use various pesticides to meet the demands. This has led to an increasing health concerns due to the presence of various harmful chemicals for humans and accumulative nature of pesticide residues. Human exposure to pesticide residues may occur in many ways, including inhalation of air, ingestion of food and water, and skin absorption. Vegetables are the indispensable components of our food habit, therefore, estimation of pesticide residues and assessment of its potential health hazards is of importance to the society. Persistent pesticide residues in Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), Cabbage (Brassica olarecea), Beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) and Capsicum (Capsicum annuum) were estimated taking Fenpyroximate, Chlorpyriphos, Phorate and 2, 4- Dichlorophenoxy acetic acid as reference standards. The samples were analysed using Gas chromatography. The results obtained from the tested samples showed no presence of any four reference pesticides.

 ISOLATION, CHARACTERIZATION AND EVALUATION OF STARCH OBTAINED FROM COLOCASIA ESCULENTA AND ORYZA SATIVA L. AS EXCIPIENT IN TABLET FORMULATION

 ABSTRACT

Starch is a biopolymer and major component of the crops such as cereal (wheat, rice, corn, oat, barely), legume (lentil, bean, pea), tuber (potato, sweet potato) and yam (Colocasia esculenta). Starch has been used as a binder and disintegrating agent in pharmaceutical industry. This study is aimed to verify the properties of starches obtained from the samples as excipients in tablet formulation. In this study the starch obtained from Colocasia esculenta and Oryza sativa L. were  evaluated and characterized and tablets were prepared using the starch samples respectively. The flow properties were evaluated using bulk density, tapped density, Hausner’s ratio, Carr’s compressibility index, angle of respose, moisture content. FTIR, apparent viscosity, carbohydrate content were determined for both the starches. The result showed that the samples possess good flow properties, have passable range of Carr’s compressibility index and Hausner’s ratio. Both starch powder give satisfactory range of Carbohydrate content.  The starches were then formulated into tablet. The hardness, tensile strength, friability,lubricant sensitivity, disintegration and weight variation were performed. It was observed that both starch shows good quality of tensile strength, and are not much sensitive to lubricants comparing with standard starch. The tablet prepared from both the starch samples showed satisfactory friability, hardness, and disintegration time.Hence, we can conclude that Colocasia esculenta and Oryza sativa L. may be used as excipients for formulating conventional tablet formulation.

 ABSTRACT

The present study was carried out with an objective of formulation and  evaluation of  floating tablets using Aspirin as a model drug to prolong the release of orally administer. One of the main adverse effects associated with Aspirin are the gastrointestinal disturbances and ulcers. Controlled release tablet of Aspirin not only could provide a more constant plasma concentration with less frequent administration, but also could help decrease the side effects to some extent.In this present work Aspirin was formulated.The tablet of Aspirin was prepared by direct compression method.The tablet properties  was determined using Carr’s index , Hausner’s ratio , Angle of repose and the in vitro  buoyancy of tablet was determined. Different types of evaluation test like  Weight variation test, Hardness test, Friability test, percentage drug content determination, drug excipient compatibility, drug release study, mechanism of drug release were performed and  determined.From the tablet properties determined and evaluation test of floating tablet Aspirin,Floating drug delivery system could be useful for the administration of Aspirin.

 ABSTRACT

The plant Tithonia diversifolia (Asteraceae) locally known as ʽBawngpu Pȃr’ has been found to be highly medicinal on account of its antiplasmodial activity due to the presence of sesquiterpene lactones and artemisinin acid analog. The leaf has been reported as the major organ used alone or in combination with other plants for treatments of wide variety of ailments such as stomach pain, sore throat, indigestion, liver diseases and pains. In order to ensure the use of only genuine and uniform materials in preparation of herbal formulation, work on standardization was carried out. The morphological, anatomical, phytochemical, physic-chemical and quantitative of the plant have been studied. The leaf of Tithonia diversilolia shows the presence of Alkaloids, Flavonoids, Saponins and Tannins.

Abstract

Combretum punctatum, commonly known as Leihruisen, the bushwillows or combretums, make up the type genus of the family Combretaceae. The genus comprises about 370 species of trees and shrubs. The chloroform extract of this plant is evaluated for in-vitro anti-inflammatory by inhibition of protein denaturation study and anti-microbial activity by disc-diffusion method and Minimum inhibitory concentration studies. The isolated extract showed significant anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial activity.

 HPTLC FINGERPRINT PROFILE OF VARIOUS TURMERIC POWDERS OF NORTH-EAST INDIA

ABTRACT

Curcuma longa Linn. (Turmeric) belongs to the family Zingiberaceae and has a lot of potential in terms of medicinal properties. The fingerprint profile of various turmeric powders obtained from Shillong (B1), Reiek(B2), Venghlui(B3), Durtlang(B4), Assam(B5) and Nagaland(B6) respectively was developed using High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography (HPTLC) technique using CAMAG Linomat 5, CAMAG TLC Scanner and Camag Smart DIGI that was programmed through WINCATS software. Extraction of the various turmeric powders were done by cold maceration process using methanol as a solvent. HPTLC fingerprinting of the samples were carried out using. HPTLC fingerprinting of methanol extracts of turmeric powders for B1 revealed the presence of six polyvalent phytoconstituents and Curcumin concentration was found to be 24.55% at 0.46 max Rf. B2 revealed the presence of seven polyvalent phytoconstituents and Curcumin was concentration was found to be 22.71 at 0.44 max Rf. B3 revealed the presence of seven polyvalent phytoconstituentsCurcumin concentration was found to be 20.97% at 0.43 max Rf. B4 revealed the presence of seven polyvalent phytoconstituents and Curcumin concentration was found to be 14.21% at 0.43 max Rf. B5 revealed the presence of six polyvalent phytoconstituents and Curcumin concentration was found to be 21.39% at 0.45 max Rf.  B6 revealed the presence of eight polyvalent phytoconstituentsCurcumin concentration was found to be 21.53% at 0.46 max Rf. HPTLC fingerprint enables a particular plant to be identified and distinguished from closely related species.

Abstract:

               The purpose of this research work was to perform quantitative analysis for the detection of elements present in the water samples of various water sources of Aizawl, Mizoram using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy and also to determine the pH of each samples. The contents of  five different elements present in the sample were determined using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy methods along with a brief discussion on the concept, technique and instrumentation of Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy. This project is broadly categorized into Introduction section and Experimental section comprising of materials and methods. The introduction section explains about the effect of the deterioration of drinking water which is also a potential source of contaminants. The experimental section explains about the principle and instrumentation of the AAS. After observing different concentration of elements in water, we can conclude that the water samples collected from most of the public well and underground are within the limit for heavy metal (WHO Standards i.e. 0.01ppm) except the Sample ID No- 1 (College Veng Tuikhur i.e, 0.2761 ppm). The elements Zn, Cr, Cu and Fe are found to be in the normal range as given by the WHO standards 1993, ICMR and Indian Standards

Abstract

                Methanol and aqueous extract of Callicarpa arborea Roxb were examined for their antimicrobial and antioxidant activity respectively of the plant. The extracts were tested as antimicrobial assay through Disc Diffusion method where ceftriaxone was used as standard and methanol was used as blank for methanol extract and the zone of inhibition was measured. Likewise antioxidant assay through a modified Thiobarbituric Acid-Reactive Species (TBARS) assay was used to measure the lipid peroxide formed and deionized water was used as blank for aqueous extract and the percentage antioxidant index was plotted against the concentrations of samples and IC50 values were determined. Same amount of butanol was used as the control. The results showed that the methanolic extract did not exhibit any antimicrobial activity against the test organisms but the aqueous extract exhibit antioxidant activity.
